Blackthorn (Prunus spinosa)

Blackthorn is now coming into bloom everywhere locally and I haven't even got around to making my Sloe Gin yet! Of course the blossom is far too early and chances are we'll have a late cold snap which will upset all that's ahead of itself. This particular spray is just along the lane, where I was wandering this lunchtime.
Interesting facts: according to The Woodland Trust, Blackthorn is a hermaphrodite, meaning both male and female reproductive parts are found on one flower. These appear on short stalks before the leaves, usually in March or April. Whilst it might be confused with a Hawthorn, the flowers on the latter emerge from the same point as the buds. The wood has traditionally been used for walking sticks and tools, but also for witches wands and staffs!
