Jan 1st is the day for the Winter Classic in the NHL. This is one of those invented traditions beloved of americans. It only dates back to 2008, but playing outdoors has a romantic echo back to the early days of ice hockey. They choose two big teams for whom there is some tradition (usually east coast, or Canadian), and where there is a rivalry. It's a normal league game though, but played in a converted baseball, or football stadium.
Today it was my adopted NHL team, the Montreal Canadiens, versus the Boston Bruins. The Canadiens (also known as the Habs) won surprisingly easy , 5-1.
