What a lovely day:-

Yesterday I mentioned that a new trench was being dug right across the crash site of the Fairey Battle aircraft that came down on 1st October 1940.

The farmer Alan and I had had somewhat similar thoughts overnight about what might be discovered down the excavation.  I had been concerned in case items of archaeological interest were to be discovered and he had been worried in case any human remains were to be found.

Anyway in the end it all worked out.  An aircrew boot was found and we had a quick look at it to see if it bore the name of anyone - it did not.  Also a number of pieces of perspex (from the cockpit canopy) and small unidentified metallic bits and pieces.

All  the pieces that were recovered  were removed to the custody of the Manx Aeronautical Museum.

I have to say that, knowing the history of what had happened in 1940, it was a poignant moment.
