Re-wilding of Scotland-wolves?

How soon will we have wolves roaming Scotland again?

Well, I hoped Jonathan Hughes; chief executive of Scottish Wildlife  Trust would tell us this afternoon at the monthly meeting of our local SWT group in Stirling that we could look forward to this during the next ten years.

“Not so,” he said “ probably not within our lifetime.”

Pity. I have always thought that having wolves roaming the Highlands of Scotland would be wild and romantic.  Farmers think otherwise.

Lynx may be possible within the not too distant future, and the SWT support this policy because they would provide a natural control mechanism for roe deer but the lynx does not have friends in high places i.e. land owners and farmers.

In principle though Scottish Wildlife Trust are in favour of re-wilding though it is a much more complicated issue than it seems at first, apart from stiff public opposition.
