Holey Road

These holes in the middle of the road have been made by the larvae of the N.Z. native Tiger Beetle. The larvae (known as penny doctors) live in their tunnels for several years and survive by popping out and grabbing passing insects. The adult beetles have been clocked moving at a speed of 5 kmh - fast for beetles! As children we used to poke stalks of dried grass in the holes, wait until the "penny doctor" attached itself and then pull it out - and put it back.
