Water on Westcliff

The forecast was for rain all day, so we welcomed this gorgeous sunny morning and walked along the ocean, hoping to see more dolphins. Alas, no mammals, but there is this phenomenon along the way--the old wave motor, better known locally as the blowhole. You hear it first--sounds like a giant huffing horse blowing air through warm lips. You look around for something to pet, and then the water whooshes up--there is drenching and screaming, laughter and oohing and aahing. It's worth following the link, which explains the history: in the 1890s it was once part of a device to pump water from the ocean to be used to keep the dust down on local roads. Now it's a curiosity, and can still take me by surprise after all these years.
