Jolly Junco

When the colder weather comes around, my feeders are full (or rather the ground around the feeders) of these little birds. This one is puffed up, sheltering in the kiwi vine at the side of the house. I read that their body temperatures are very warm, so they puff up their feathers in order to trap air which then gets warmed by their body, in order to stay warm.

We had our first measurable snow fall today, mostly coming in squalls. It was only a little over an inch, but enough to be a nuisance.
