Eglise Saint Germain de Charonne

Rare indeed, a church cemetary in Paris! At Eglise St Germain de Charonne, it "escaped" the regrouping of all Parisian cemetaries under Haussmann because the township of Charonne was annexed to Paris only in 1860.
This statue and tomb is of Begue de Magloire - an excentric who professed to be the private secretary of Robespierres, but in fact was a builder, and a drunk.  But became wealthy, bought this huge concession at the cemetary, had the monument constructed - of salvaged materials!  The statue is rumored to be of Rousseau! but Begue's  name is on the tomb...
He was a drunkard - in French, we say, euphemistically that "he liked the bottle" - so his friends gave a wild wine party when he dies, and buried him with a liter of wine!

Oh the stories these cemetaries could tell!
