Male Greater Spotted Woodpecker

Apparently also known as the Pied Woodpecker due to his black and white plumage.
I'm thrilled to bits that he has become a frequent visitor to the feeding station and was sharing his feast with a little Blue Tit this morning, I think it's amazing that the little birds don't seem to be intimidated by the size of him.   I've put one of him on the peanut feeder in extras, this shows his red nape which the females don't have.   Both pictures also show the brilliant blue sky that we enjoyed today with temperatures just hovering above freezing during daylight hours.   It had plummeted when I came back from my sons earlier.
