Near the start of the John Muir Way at Dunbar the path winds up the cliff and through a little tunnel from which can be seen the remains of the once great Dunbar Castle at the entrance to the harbour in the background.
Until the 1960s this footpath led down to a pavilion and ballroom beside a huge outdoor swimming pool complex with water fountains and slides in the big pool, a children’s pool and a boating pond. Next to the large rock there were diving boards but today there is no evidence of the former attraction that thousands had enjoyed at the time when Dunbar was one of the most popular resorts in Scotland. When it was originally built in Victorian times the Gents Pool was here with the Ladies Pool a mile away on the East Beach and a newspaper in 1912 reported the scandal that a lady had been seen bathing with the gentlemen. Now a modern indoor pool has been built near the castle remains where both sexes can enjoy the leisure facilities in warm comfort.
