Sally Mair - Loving life

Republic Day

Today is Republic Day here in India. Celebrated in most places with a public holiday. As the school I visit is a residential school though there are some pupils there at all times do the school has a celebration.
We had a flag hoisting at school attended by the Distict Disability Rehabilitation Officer and a member of the State Legislative Assembly (and her family).
Part of the event was a cultural programme involving dance. These 3 girls put on a great performance. What was most moving and a real credit to those in charge was the performance of the central dancer. She has Downs syndrome g this can mean that the person has difficulty with rhythm and may appear to have jerky movements. This little girl's dancing was not rhythmic, however she knew every single step along with the complex arm and subtle hand movements. The other two dancers were very enthusiastic and more fluid in their dancing, but they constantly referred and checked back to the girl in the middle who plodded through with great accuracy. She had a real sense of satisfaction when she finished.
Wonderful to watch and great that she had her day in centre stage.
