Over the Bar

I was invited as a guest to our Sales Conference and was delighted to be going to St Georges, the FA's prestigious centre. The facilities and hotel were excellent with the football theme throughout. Our Scottish Sales Director didn't sleep a wink having been put in a room with prints of Gazza's wondergoal in Euro 96 adorning his walls :-)

On the way out I spotted this statue, in a more remote corner of the grounds, of a keeper I'd never heard of; Arthur Wharton, Oct 1865 - Dec 1930. Te world's first black professional footballer. He was also a pro cricketer, cycling champion, rugby player and the worlds first official sprint champion - some sportsman !
