Judith's photos

Wall

There is a Hauser and Wirth gallery in Bruton, a small town about 12 miles away from Frome. Thanks to a post by Arteegeedee, I was reminded that they have a Don McCullin retrospective exhibition on at the moment (but only just - it finishes on Sunday).

There were some very powerful images, covering fifty years of photography, from London in the late 50s, through war and famine, before finishing with scenes of rural life in Somerset. Many images seemed familiar because I can remember the news stories at the time. However, strange as it may seem, the images that I found most shocking were those of Bradford in the 1960s. To think that people lived in such abject poverty in this country in my lifetime... We talk of austerity now, but the people in those images probably had little beyond the clothes on their backs.

No photography was allowed in the gallery, and it was too dull to do justice to the grounds, so here is a view of a wall! This is the wall of Sexey's Hospital, which is in the main road running through Bruton and which was built as almshouses around 1630.
