The Peruvian Fisherman Returns

Today, we drove to Huanchaco Beach, outside the town of Trujillo in Peru. Here we were treated to a demonstration of how to make traditional ceviche, as well as how to make the Peruvian cocktail known as a Pisco Sour. According to Wikipedia, Huanchaco is the birthplace of ceviche, so we definitely came to the right place for a cooking lesson!

Afterwards, we walked on the beach, and saw many "Caballito de totoras" - fishing boats made from the indigenous totora reed. They have been made this way by the local people for thousands of years, and they are still used today. Here is one of the fishermen illustrating how he kneels on his caballito, and paddles it with a bamboo paddle. The fishermen go out to sea in groups of six or seven, and spread their nets together. It looks like a very arduous and dangerous way to earn a living!
