Demolition

Imagine what a small boy, looking out of the windows to the right of that scaffolding, would make of the large machine currently parked in what was the back green. Mr Flum can, as that was where spent his early years.

The machine is employed in crushing debris generated by the demolition of old rustic garages and workshops in Meadow Lane; the (grade B listed) tenements on Buccleuch Place backing on to this area have been emptied of their university departments (see Extra), and are being refitted, for the University to use the entire space to create student accommodation - 250 places in Meadow Lane and 269 in Buccleuch Place.

The workman onsite, who kindly gave us this information, was as saddened by the changes as was Mr Flum, having grown up nearby himself, and remarked on the quality of the tenement buildings themselves and was concerned that existing decorative features of architraves and cornices  were not part of the architectural plan but were destroyed along with more recent alterations.

I wonder what delightful building will take their place.
