A Child Again

Let him be a child again
let loose
in this huge world. Let him
gaze afresh
at the creatures he comes across
so that he has to guess
or invent a name
that belongs to them.

Let him hear them roar
so that he runs in fear
giggling all the while
with the excitement
of it all. Let them chase him
across a beach
that is a desert
but don’t let them catch him.

I want him to get home safely
and have chips and beans
and fish fingers for tea.
And ice cream if he asks for it.
And make sure he has a bath
and gets tucked up in a cosy bed
and is read a bedtime story.
And that he sleeps soundly
and has wonderful dreams.
