Koh Jum Village

Today we visited Koh Jum Village. Sometimes there is a problem when maps aren't drawn to scale, and today was a good example. We set off to walk down the jungle track, which someone said was about 20 minute walk, to find it took us getting on for an hour in the sweltering heat. Thank goodness we always carry several bottles of water. Once we reached the concrete road, we found a tuktuk and driver, who took us the remaining distance to the main village on the island. It was still about 15 minutes in the tuktuk. A typical little island village, and hardly touched by tourism. Mains electricity arrived on this island only in 2009, before that it was generators for many years.
The main shot is of a village shop, where we bought some banana fritters that we had just watched being cooked. I was thinking of asking for two, but Clive said four. We were both astonished when she counted out about 20 fritters into a bag, which cost us about 40 pence sterling. Needless to say we could eat only a couple. We tried to donate the remainder to our next tuktuk driver, but he declined, so sadly they had to go to the fishes. We've been advised not to keep food in our bungalow otherwise we will be invaded by insects or monkeys.
My extras are the main street in the village, and a sign in the gardens where we are staying. This reminds me that Taiwan (and our family) is less than 3,000 kilometres away, and that we are now on the same continent. We shall be meeting up with our son and family next weekend, and I'm so excited. I wonder if we will recognise each other after a year?
