When we went down to the woods today....

Foxglove from the photogenic front of course, cos from the other side there are no flowers to be seen.

There were white ones too, but they came out a little overexposed, plus you see more detail on the purple ones.

If you look closely you'll see tiny guard hairs that are meant to put off tiny insects from going in to nick the nectar, in favour of bigger insects like bees. That's because all the reproductive bits are on the 'ceiling' of the inside of the flower and only something like a bee is big enough to rub against it, and cause pollination when it flies from one flower to another. And supposedly purple is a bees favourite colour. All quite clever, huh?!

While I was pondering all this, Clova and Scorrie found a lovely brown plunge pool and went for a dip.
