A concrete love affair

A visit to Ashby Canal & Moira Furnace

Another interesting afternoon spent walking around Leicestershire's industrial heritage.

I walked the section between Bridge 60, where the Ashby and Nuneaton Joint Railway formely crossed the canal, the decaying overgrown abutments flanking the tranquil canalscape, Snarestone Tunnel South portal beyond. All the way to newly installed Bridge 62 which crosses the final feet of canal before the dry section begins.

It is expected that the dry section between Donisthorpe and Bridge 62 will be rebuilt, with bridges, locks and even an aqueduct being re-installed.

Eventually the canal passes the Moira Furnace. A 212 year old structure that is at the heart of the industrial revolution, a coke fuelled steam engined blown blast furnace.
