Carol's ramblings

Up early for a coach trip out into Funchal, Madeira. The trip was to go on a cable car up to a little church in Monte, then to the Botanical Gadens before onto a wine tasting session.

Sun rise lovely, ship docking into port around 8:15, joined the coach at 9:15 for the trip. Off to the old town first to look at the farmers market (lots of and made items, traditional goods, plus fruit/veg and fresh fish (poooo smelly)). Then off to the cable car - never been good at heights but thought I would give it a go, AJ said it would be fine - she was right! Beautiful trip up, very smooth and not scary at all. Then there was the option of how to come down - coach or toboggan (wicker basket ones). AJ wanted to do the toboggan, couldn't let her do it on her own, so after parting with some euros we board the basket! It was most exhilarating - 2km down hill on a tobaggon, guided by two gentleman - such fun. I have photographic proof - will post later. As we had gone for the quick downhill we stopped for a coffee (to recover) before being picked up by the coach. Then on to the botanical gardens, beautiful - so many different plants from around the world. Last point on the trip, stopped off at the local wine makers to sample Madeira wine (sherry) and some Madeira cake (Mmmmm). Finally, back to the ship- siesta in the sun (around 23/24 degrees today).

Absolutely great day, lots of laughter and great places. Madeira is very pretty - bit busy for them today as it is their annual carnival tonight at 9pm so they are closing roads and putting rows of seating out ready.

Sailing tonight at 8pm - at sea all day tomorrow, docking at 8am on Monday so no internet - first back-blip for ages!

Happy :) :) :)
