Carnival (also called "Shrove Tuesday" - eve of the lent) is originally a Roman Catholic folk feast, which possibly has pagan roots and is celebrated in the three days preceding Ash Wednesday. According to tradition, the festival lasts from Sunday to Tuesday - Shrove Tuesday. At midnight starts the lent term of 40 days, until Easter.
