Natures Way

As Sal can best be described as virtually barren we could not work out what these randomly appearing flowers were growing along the beach. Thanks to Google I have discovered they are a rare and localised plant called Cistanche phelypaea or yellow broomrape and they are a holoparasitic species that get their nutrients and water from the roots of other nearby plants, which explains why we saw them near occasional succulents as in this picture, or by small palms. It seems nature always finds a way even in the most unlikely places.
