BATTLE LINES

John Paul Jones 1747-1792 was a Scottish American sailor. He is known as the Father of the American Navy and he was responsible for several naval attacks on the UK. In 1779 he took charge of the 42 gun ship USS Bonhomme Richard. Later that year he took part in the Battle of Flamborough Head, which can be seen from this viewpoint.

This plaque commemorates the battle. In recent years many divers have searched for the wreck of the BR – so far to no avail. Standing here the mind wonders . . .
