The Earth Goddess speaks

during the piece of street theatre which opened the Carnaval period in Pézenas. The plot concerned the Prefect attempting to cancel Carnaval under the State of Emergency actually imposed in France, especially since the patron saint of the town, Saint Blaise (a 3rd century martyr in Turkey) was detained at the frontiers of Europe as an illegal migrant.  But under the insistence of the crowd the Prefect was forced to seek the advice first of Marianne, the spirit of the Republic, and secondly of this goddess. She invoked the powers of Tempest, Flood and Fire to combat the political powers, and release the Savages who were able to track down St Blaise (who'd arrived smuggled in a fridge), give him the keys to the town and  thereby open Carnaval.  Cue songs, fireworks and a week of mayhem.

A very clever spectacle which managed to be great fun while including themes of democracy, welcome of refugees and climate change - and many jokes at the expense of the current town council. Every town should have one. First in a short series (3).
