Day 045 Rufus Stone

I've often seen signs to the Rufus Stone and yesterday I finally went to see it. The Rufus stone marks the spot where William the Conquerer's son William Rufus was killed by an arrow shot at a deer that glanced off an oak tree and killed him.  The original memorial stone was defaced and covered in graffiti so the victorians covered it in a metal jacket and there it is today, surrounded by ancient oak trees, a tribute to something that happened over a thousand years ago. 

I like the sense of continuity when events that happened more than a day ago are mostly forgotten
