Mind the Gap

Sunday afternoon saw Mollie, Freya and I meet Amy and Oliver at Temple station for a trip round the now closed Aldwych tube station.

It is a very interesting tour, run by volunteers, that explains how and why the station was built, run and then finally closed in 1994 due to uneconomic repairs being needed to the lift mechanisms.  They also explain how the station was used as an air raid shelter in WWI and WWII with the latter seeing people practically living there overnight for years.

The station is also used for film and TV sets including Superman 4, 28 Weeks Later, V for Vendetta (obvs, see extra!), Mr Selfridge and Sherlock.

The Prodigy also used the station and corridors for their anthemic Firestarter video.

An intriguing and quirky hour underground!
