Catkins

Some catkins on hazel trees before the sun disappeared and the rains came back.

According to the encyclopedia: 
a catkin or ament is a slim, cylindrical flower cluster, with inconspicuous or no petals, usually wind-pollinated but sometimes insect pollinated. They contain many, usually unisexual flowers. Many types of trees or shrubs can bear them.
