Gertrude Bell

Today after lunch with a friend I enjoyed a fascinating exhibition in the Great North Museum entitled "The Extraordinary Gertrude Bell"
Born in the north east 1868 she chose to spend most of her life travelling in the middle east as an explorer, archeologist and diplomat. During and after World War One her extensive knowledge of the middle east led her to being key in discussions between the British Government and locals in the creation of the state of Iraq.
