Garden blip

Emergency garden blip today and I need to study that course a lot of you are doing - "A year with My camera".  What am I supposed to do when taking pictures of white things to stop them over exposing?  I am getting the weekly e-mails but there is too much going on just right now for me to read them!  Whatever the advice is , it would be useful for swans too.
