Hertford Castle - Postern Gate

This is the Postern Gate and part of the seven feet thick curtain wall of flint and stone which was added to Hertford Castle in 1170 by King Henry.

Hertford, was first fortified in 911 by Edward the Elder and a Norman castle was built in William the Conqueror's time. Every Monarch up to and including Elizabeth I visited it, but unfortunately hardly any of it remains.

Hertford was an important trading place because of the confluence of four rivers: Beane, Lea, Mimram & Rib.

I discovered a few new things about the town today, some of which will no doubt feature in future blips. I was doing a Murder Mystery Treasure Trail to see whether it would be suitable for Brownies or Scouts. There are lots of similar trails available online for other UK towns under 'Treasure Trails'.

At home in the garden I also lifted and divided lots of the snowdrop bulbs. They provide a beautiful white carpet which is enlarging every year.
