Matthew Henson housing

Phoenix history lesson: These buildings and courtyard are originals from the first African-American housing project in Phoenix. The Matthew Henson Public Housing Project was built between 1940 and 1960. The rest of the housing was demolished and replaced with larger, energy-efficient apartments for low-income residents.*

Matthew Henson
was the first African-American Arctic explorer. He had no ties to Phoenix. This was just named after him.
