A Sobering Juxtaposition

This morning, we sailed into the port of Santos, Brazil.  Santos is a large city with the Southern Hemisphere's largest port, and it is also famous as the home of Santos Futebol Clube, which Pele made famous.  We visited the club, as well as a zoological and botanical garden, and also a coffee museum which is located in a splendidly over the top building where coffee auctions used to be held in the 1920's and 1930's.

Directly across the harbour from where our luxury cruise ship is berthed lies this "favela" -- a waterside slum.  It's hard to imagine the living conditions there, with tarps laid across leaky roofs, and garbage piled high amongst the rickety stilts that hold these hovels above the water level.  It made me feel guilty and sad.
