DAVID AND THE SPITFIRE

I took our youngest grandson, David, out for a walk down to the Spitfire memorial which is less than a mile from where we live. The Spitfire is a replica of 1356th Spitfire built at the Vickers-Supemarine factory in Eastleigh. It was part of an RAF order for 500 Spitfire Mk. 1s dated 9th June 1940. Spitfire X4859 first flew on 17th December 1940 and was originally assigned to 308 squadron but later moved to 129 squadron. The plane received her 58 Operational Training Unit designation as PQ-N and flew into Grangemouth on 15th September 1941. Unfortunately, just over two months later, X4859 crashed over Avondale estate, Polmont, killing Sergeant Eugeniusz Lukomski.

You can tell David was impressed!
