French Fireworks

July 14th is the anniversary of the storming of the Bastille in 1789 and the start of the French Revolution.
The French still make a big thing of it, we had a torch lit procession through the streets, complete with samba band and two scantily clad samba dancers, although how they figured in the Revolution is not easy to understand. Followed by sausage and chips before a huge firework display lasting 20 minutes to the sound of more samba music .... and all this in a small town of 7500 people, most of whom had gone away on holiday as is the French habit. Still, a lot of Swiss came over the border for the free show. Some Swiss friends even thanked me for paying my taxes in France to fund their free entertainment!
