The old paper mill

The day being fine and clear, I headed out to catch up with some  dereliction.

I discovered this ruin quite by chance a few years ago and was bowled over with the size and surprise of it. It was built sometime in the late 18th century as a cotton mill (with 1512 spindles, the largest in South Wales). In the next century it was turned into a paper mill manufacturing "rope browns and manilla papers for steel, iron, japan and bright goods, grocers' and drapers' papers". Thomas Harvey who converted it also built the imperial paper mills at Peterhof in Russia.
The extra shot shows the three-arch bridge spanning the mill leat that connects with the river nearby, and here is a rather lovely painting that illustrates how the mill must have looked in its heyday. Only this part of the front elevation remains, the architrave and the rest of the structure have gone. The current owners wish it would fall down as it constitutes a hazard to people like myself who are intrigued and want to explore it.
