In these parts the idea of carrying out certain tasks according to the moon phases is not uncommon. Medical operations should always be done by waning moon and depending on the organ being operated on, certain days according to the animal sign on that day (not the normal monthly horoscope signs). The 26th Feb was waning moon in Libra : kidneys, bladder and hips none of which were being treated. Had I had kidney stone surgery,  the positive working of the waning moon would probably not have compensated the negative Libra. Carting out slurry is NON STARTER since last Thursday and for the rest of the waxing moon. However on Thursday every slurry tank in the county was put in to action as we have a period without rain and the last few days of the waning moon, meant the soil has dried out sufficiently. Sometimes rules have to be broken and so long as it stays dry, the slurry which will not now be rapidly absorbed, will at least not be washed in to the streams.

I was enlightened about the power of the moon by former neighbours, Heide & Sepp in 1995. They are farmers and tried wherever possible to follow the rules around the farm but also garden and house. They are firm believers in the theories. If I think about the power of the moon alone on our tidal ebbs and flows, I can understand the thinking. Sepp also has forests and was able to get premium prices for his timber if felled on the "right" moon days as there are carpenters who want this product and will pay the extra price. I had a Facebook chat with their daughter Dani this evening - she is now a proud mother herself and farmers wife. I should have asked her if she still keeps to some of the rules - I suspect so.

The herons were out in force to see if there were any rich pickings too. I had to add the Piaggeo "Ape" especially for Nogbad.

FINALLY - Today is grandson Elliot's Eighth Birthday. Far away on the Emerald Isle, he sounded in great form and really enjoying himself. He got his first bike with gears and I  understand Tracey and Thunderbirds are making a comeback. However he informed me that he would be redeeming his birthday voucher when he's over in June for a visit to a Danish building block company site near here.

It was a lovely chat with him and Kate but sent me in to a severe bout of melancholy in the evening. Will be over tomorrow, have to tidy up before son and girlfriend arrive in a few weeks.
