Sunday market

This is only a tiny area of the giant market in the town of Tlacolula that fills a huge building everyday and flows out onto a maze of streets on Sundays.
Today we enjoyed breakfast with friends who live in a village not far from Tlacolula, then we all went to the market, where there is a mind-boggling array of food, textiles, baskets, clothing, tools, pottery, etc., etc., etc.
This week is an event called Oaxaca Sabe, which happens twice a year. Participating restaurants offer special meals at a flat rate of 250 pesos ($14 US at today's exchange rate). The meals include an appetizer, main dish, dessert, and one drink such as mezcal, beer, or fruit waters. It's a fun way to try new places, especially ones that are expensive. So we finished up the day with an excellent dinner, then walked down to the zócalo (plaza) that was full of people of all ages strolling, eating, people watching, playing with balloons, and listening to mariachi or marimba bands. What a day!
