A wooden shovel and a grain rake once used in a grain drying kiln.

The kiln floor was made of slatted cast iron plates over a furnace blasting heat from an anthracite fire.

Work in the kiln was hot and sweaty for the men charged with turning the grain using the wooden shovel, it was then raked to even out over the floor.
