Today MonoMonday's theme is ‘Looking up’ hosted by Trisharooni.

Several  Baillies’ lamp posts have stood in Bristo Square for over 30 years but unfortunately they are rather dirty at the moment due to the construction work in the square.  Made of cast iron they are painted green and gold with the Edinburgh’s  crest on top of the lantern (extra).

Until 1975 a lamp post would be erected outside each Baillie’s door during his or her term of office but now they can be seen only outside the house of the Lord Provost. Apparently the custom started about two hundred years ago with the Lord Provost having two, one of which would stay after the term of office finished.

(Extra  Following yesterday’s comparison of horse and tractor power these two tractors which were working today have the combined horsepower far exceedingl 300 horses.  The back wheels are taller than a man but sometimes there are larger and much newer tractors around)
