The old post box

According to the internet,  a G R postbox was installed between 1910 and 1936 but this box in Penshurst looks much older .  More research shows that this letter box moved from the local pub to its current location in a building dated 1850 from where the local tailor/postmaster worked; see extra. Letter boxes started to appear in Britain from 1853 but they were not standardised in appearance until 1859. At first they were  green but changed to red in 1874 because people said they had trouble spotting them.  This must be one of the very early non standard ones despite the GR badge.
