Great Spotted Woodpecker

... in my garden - again. Another warm and windy day, but I can tell you good news: our winter will come back this week. The next season is called the crusty snow winter and after that we´ll have the departure of ice season (spring). The crusty snow is so hard that in the morning you can walk on the snow where ever you want.
CrustA layer of snow on the surface of the snowpack that is stronger than the snow below, which may be powder snow. Depending on their thickness and resulting strength, crusts can be termed "supportable", meaning that they will support the weight of a human, "breakable", meaning that they will not, or "zipper", meaning that a skier can break and ski through the crust. Crusts often result from partial melting of the snow surface by direct sunlight or warm air followed by re-freezing (wikipedia)
