Bedeviled By Disappointment ...

Sadly, our bad luck seems to be following us still.  Today we were supposed to visit Devil's Island in French Guiana -- the infamous prison colony made famous by Henri Charrière in his best-selling book Papillon, and by the exiled French political prisoner Alfred Dreyfus.  However, due to the very windy weather today, the swells made it unsafe to launch the tenders, so no one was able to go ashore.

The best I can do is this collage of pictures taken from the ship's deck.  The top left image is the flag of French Guiana, the top right shows the considerable currents and rip tide that run between the islands.  There are three islands very close together:  Ile Royale, which was the main administrative island where most of the prison buildings are located, Devil's Island where Dreyfus was imprisoned in solitary splendour, and St. Joseph's Island which was where those unfortunate men who were sentenced to solitary confinement were held.  The bottom left image is the top of the lighthouse on Ile Royale, located close to the old hospital, and the bottom right shows the tender platform inundated by the swells.
