A Chink In The Armour

Following in
my father’s footsteps
I patrol the house last thing at night.

I learned from him
to do the stuff
that good dads do at bedtime.

I switch off, unplug,
check windows, lock doors, empty cups.
Make sure it’s safe.

I don’t want there to be
a chink in the armour
where those we abhor
can find a way in and hurt us.

I want us all to sleep through
and reach a safe harbour
where the sea is blue
the beach is golden
and the sky is always up there.

Though why
it doesn’t come crashing down
on those who create the nightmares
I do not know.
