Fethaland fishing station

Shetland day 9.
Not the best of photos but I put it in for the interest value.
This was once a seasonal station for the haaf (deepsea) fishing. The men came for the season and lived in bothies, one for each boat crew, going out in their sixareens 30 or more miles offshore for several days at a time. The fish was dried on the beach and on this station there are 2 beaches and accompanying boat noosts and bothies.
We walked here along a track in the mist and carried on across the narrow strip of land past a lighthouse (built quite recently because of the Sullom Voe oil terminal across the sound) to a small cliff. The walk book suggested you could go further to the very tip of north Mainland but we could see how to get down onto the narrow, rocky, connecting strip.
We returned to the ruins (when I took this pic) and then turned to follow and undulating path back along the cliffs to the start. It was frustrating weather-wise as the mist kept almost clearing and we could tell the sun wasn't far away, but just as a good view was appearing it would go again. There are various more places of interest along this quiet bit of coast and on the road back to North Voe there's a wingless plane on a croft.
The sun was shining back at the tent but the wind was getting up though we didn't have to worry about cooking as we were invited out for a meal and had a very pleasant evening.
