Espetos

Today is the sailor's fiesta - when they carry the Virgin del Carmen through fishing towns all along the coast. After the procession the Virgin Mary is launched onto the sea followed by a flotilla of fishing craft, complete with fireworks, music and boat-loads of Andalusian merriment.

(Yes, I know what some of you are thinking - 'sailors and a virgin' does raise a giggle but it's an amazing night. The atmosphere is superb and so positive. Seeing 150 sailors, carrying the huge 'trono' into the crashing waves, with the Virgin on top, surrounded by flowers, with fireworks exploding in the night sky is memorable to say the least).

I was about to post an iPhone pic of all this (will update my blog instead) but then spotted these sardines cooking on sticks (each one is called an 'Espeto') cooked on a classic wood burning BBQ - a little sand filled boat.

This is truly, quintessentially Malagueño, so had to share.

Sea fresh, they taste fantastic! (with a cold glass of white of course!)
