The Kilbar cross

As ever I expect beauty is in the eye of the beholder but this carved stone, known as the Kilbar cross, I thought was stunning. In fact it is only a replica - the original is in the National Museum of Scotland - but a life like one. Dating to around the 10th century, amazingly on the back in an inscription in Norse Runes to Thorgerth, daughter of Steinar. One of the extra photos shows those runes, although the lighting was not helpful.
You can see in the background two other carved stones, one with an image of a birlinn, the boats of the medieval period. I have added an image of that too.
All housed in an atmospheric 12th century chapel, the signage to it is almost non-existent. You have to work hard in the Hebrides at times to find the treasures but this to me was certainly one and slightly reminiscent of the carved menhirs of France.
