St Michael & The Devil

When commissioned, this was a controversial sculpture. Not because of its subject matter, but because of its sculptor.

Its St Michael & The Devil, on Coventry Cathedral. Artist - Sir Jacob Epstein. Who was Jewish. And thus was considered to be an unsuitable candidate for one of the major pieces commissioned for the Cathedral.

Apparently, when it was pointed out to the Cathedral's Reconstruction Committee that Jesus was Jewish too, the objections melted away.

And a good thing too - its a magnificent work.
