Ordinary Lives

The day began
with sun
streaming in
through windows
that face the sea
which is why we
thought it a good idea
to go down to
the beach café
for a treat
- a bacon sarnie
and a mug of tea.
That misleading sky,
too blue to be true,
hinted at heat
which, thanks to
a sneaky breeze,
wasn’t quite there.
Once we’d sat
outside with our teas
we realised
we’d be better off
inside. Not that
we’re difficult to please;
we did appreciate
the sun, the blue,
the tea, the bacon
and the view
we had as we munched and drank
and gave thanks
for our fortunate lives. And I’m
sure I’ll remember
my hat, scarf and gloves
next time.
