Trains and things

Trains still have a mystique. There is a poetry. To sit back in a train, look out the window, glance up from your book to see the countryside rolling by, pass towns and see people at their normal lives, peer into their backyards -- that's wonderful.

I was envious today of people boarding the train at Ballarat.

Whilst the train is modern, the old gates, signals and signal box are heritage. And it is a wonderful old station, nicely restored after being neglected under a conservative government (now back in power!).

What does the future hold for our trains and stations? For public transport generally?
