Numbers

I love numbers. I love the shapes and patterns that they make, and sounds too, sometimes. I don't have synaesthesia (to my regret) and I can't see in multiple dimensions like the extraordinary Marcus du Sautoy but I do think that the way numbers fit together is beautiful. In the original, aesthetic, sense.

However... I don't care very much about celebrating decade-anniversaries or jubilees or so-called significant birthdays because base 10 feels arbitrary. If we had base 12 (much more satisfying than 10) we wouldn't celebrate what we know as 10 and 20 or 100 and 200, we'd celebrate what we know as 12 and 24 or 144 and 288  (which would be written as 10, 20, 100 and 200).

(I know, I know, but I do try to be socialised and if anyone is kind and bold enough to invite me to a base 10 birthday party I won't refuse...)

Anyway, here's to the 148th. Written as 200 if you look hard enough.

If you're still here, thanks for indulging me and please give me a wave.  I don't normally dare talk about this.
